Nanotechnology for Improved Turmeric Bioavailability for Therapeutic Applications

Researchers from Delhi University in India have developed a nanoparticle-based delivery system for improving the bioavailability of turmeric, a spice with therapeutic effects, and are conducting in-vitro and animal testing en route to human trials. Turmeric has low bioavailability because of its poor solubility. The new drug delivery system improves the absorption of turmeric in the body and can be administered intravenously or orally. According to Dr. AK Dinda of the All-India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS), 5 to 10 grams of loaded nanoparticles are a sufficient dose for a week. Dr. Dinda further explained that the therapy could potentially be used for stopping the spread of cancer cells, connective tissue disease, chronic arthritis, and some inflammatory diseases.
